Overview
What's actually in SLC water — and what filtration can fix
Salt Lake City municipal water is treated and safe — that's not the question. The question is whether you want to drink, cook with, and bathe in the chlorine, chloramine, sediment, and trace metals that come along with it. SLC water carries variable levels of chlorine for disinfection, sediment from snowmelt picking up dirt off the watershed, and in some neighborhoods trace lead from old service lines (city is replacing these but the project will take years). Older homes with original galvanized supply also pick up rust and minerals from the pipes themselves on the first morning draw.
Filtration handles the things softening doesn't. A softener removes calcium and magnesium. A filter removes chlorine taste, sediment, organic compounds, and (with the right cartridge) lead and VOCs. Most SLC homes that take water seriously install both — a softener for hardness and a whole-home filter for taste and contaminants.
What we install
- Whole-home sediment + carbon filter — basic combo. Removes sediment and chlorine taste at the entry point. $1,850–$2,800 installed.
- Whole-home premium filter (UV + carbon + sediment) — adds UV sterilization for any biological concerns. $2,800–$4,500.
- Under-sink reverse osmosis — kitchen drinking water. Removes 95–99% of dissolved solids including lead, chlorine, fluoride, sodium. $585–$1,250 installed.
- Carbon block filter (under-sink) — simpler, less expensive than RO, removes chlorine and basic VOCs. $385–$685.
- Lead-specific filter — for homes with old service lines or lead solder concerns. $485–$985.
- Whole-house cartridge replacement service — every 6–12 months depending on usage and cartridge type.
What's specific to old SLC homes
Two things matter here. Lead service lines — SLC has been replacing older lead service lines for years, but in some pre-1940 neighborhoods (parts of Marmalade, Capitol Hill, west-side Glendale) you may still have a lead lateral from the city main to your meter. SLC public utilities can tell you. If you're concerned, an under-sink RO or lead-specific filter at the kitchen handles drinking and cooking water. Galvanized internal supply — if your home was plumbed in galvanized in 1925, the inside of those pipes is rusty and depositing iron and manganese into your water. You see it as the brown trail in your sink under the faucet drip. A whole-home sediment filter helps; a repipe permanently fixes it.
What Valley does differently
We test SLC water before quoting filtration. We don't sell systems based on a generic pitch — we test for chlorine, hardness, iron, and ask what you're actually concerned about. Some households need only a $585 under-sink kitchen filter. Others need full whole-home + RO. We tell you the smallest system that solves your actual problem.
Members of the Quality Service Club get 15% off any filter install plus the annual cartridge replacement service.

Warning signs
Signs Your SLC Water Could Use Filtration
If any of these match, filtration is worth a free assessment.
Chlorine smell or taste at the kitchen tap
Sediment or 'specks' visible at the bottom of a glass after sitting
Brown trail in the sink under a dripping faucet (iron/manganese)
Pink stain in the toilet bowl or shower (manganese)
Cloudy water that clears after sitting (air vs. sediment — we can tell which)
Black flecks at faucet aerators (deteriorating supply hose or rust)
Old home with original galvanized supply pipe
Concerns about lead service line in pre-1940 SLC neighborhood
Coffee or tea tastes 'off' compared to filtered water
Want bottled-water quality from the kitchen tap without buying bottled

Right-sized filtration
Stop buying bottled water for your kitchen tap.
An under-sink RO costs $585–$1,250 installed and pays for itself in a year vs. bottled water for a family of four. Same water, no plastic, instant.

The Process
How a Water Filtration Install Goes in SLC

On the truck
Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.
Water test
Tech runs a quick test for chlorine, hardness, iron, sediment, and pH. Asks what specifically concerns you (taste? lead? sediment?). Test plus discussion takes 20–30 minutes.
Right-size the system
We recommend the simplest system that fixes your actual problem. Sometimes that's a $585 under-sink kitchen filter, not a $4,500 whole-house RO.
Plan the install location
Whole-home systems install at the main supply entry, typically right before the softener if you have one. Under-sink RO installs in the cabinet. We check space, drain access, and electrical.
Install
Whole-home: cut into supply, install bypass valve, mount filter housings, connect to drain (for backwashing systems). 3–5 hours typical. Under-sink: 1.5–2.5 hours including faucet install.
Commission and walkthrough
Run system through full cycle, flush new cartridges, test treated water. Walkthrough on cartridge replacement schedule and how to use the bypass valve for service.
