Overview
The cheapest HVAC maintenance you can do — and the one most homeowners skip
A clean furnace filter saves you money four ways: it cuts your energy bill 5-15% (the blower doesn't have to fight a clogged filter), it extends the life of the blower motor and heat exchanger, it improves indoor air quality, and it's the #1 reason we get "no heat" calls in January that we resolve in 5 minutes for free. A clogged filter restricts airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the safety limit switch shuts the furnace off. Most homeowners don't realize the fix is a $20 filter.
We replace filters as a standalone visit ($89-$145 with filter included) or — much more commonly — as part of a furnace tune-up, AC service, or Quality Service Club annual maintenance. We can also set you up on a filter subscription where we ship the right filter to you every 60-90 days so you never have to think about it.
Filters we replace
- Standard 1" disposable — most common, the slot in front of your furnace. MERV 8 is our default recommendation.
- Pleated 1" high-capacity — better filtration without restricting airflow. MERV 11 for allergies.
- Media filters (4-5" cabinet) — Aprilaire, Honeywell, Lennox PureAir. Last 6-12 months instead of 1-3.
- HEPA filters — true HEPA cabinet systems for severe allergies or asthma.
- Washable / electrostatic — clean and reinstall, no replacement needed.
Sizing problems
Half of the "filter doesn't fit" calls we take are because someone bought a 16x25 when the slot is 16x25x4 (depth matters), or bought a 20x20 when the actual cabinet is 20x20x1. Filter sizing is W x H x D, and all three dimensions matter. We measure on first visit, photograph the slot, and document the exact size for next time.
MERV ratings — what to actually pick
- MERV 8 — basic dust, pollen, lint. Default for healthy households. $5-10 per filter.
- MERV 11 — allergies, pets, mild asthma. Better filtration, slight airflow restriction. $10-20 per filter.
- MERV 13 — severe allergies, COVID era recommendation. Significant airflow restriction — only use if your blower can handle it. $15-30 per filter.
- MERV 16-20 (HEPA) — medical-grade, requires dedicated HEPA cabinet. $50-150 per filter.
Higher MERV is NOT always better. A MERV 13 in a system designed for MERV 8 will choke the blower and cost you in heat exchanger wear. We size filtration to your specific system.
Utah-specific filter issues
Inversion season. December-February inversions trap PM2.5 in the valley and indoor filtration matters more here than most US cities. We push MERV 11 minimum for any Wasatch Front home with kids, allergies, or anyone running indoor air during inversion.
Construction dust. The Wasatch Front is a construction zone — clog rates are 30-50% faster than national average. If you're within a half-mile of active construction, replace every 30-45 days during build, not 60-90.
What Valley does differently
We measure and document filter size on first visit so you never get the wrong one. We can supply filters as part of any service call ($5-30 markup over retail to bring the right one with us). Quality Service Club Heating membership ($89/year) includes one filter swap per year + annual tune-up + 15% off any repairs. Subscription delivery available — we ship the right filter every 60-90 days.

Warning signs
Signs Your Furnace Filter Needs Changing (Right Now)
Most filters last 60-90 days. Some homes need 30. Watch for these signs.
Filter looks visibly gray, dirty, or matted with dust
Higher than normal heating bill — blower working harder
Furnace short-cycling (running 2-3 minutes, then shutting off)
Furnace turns on but won't reach set temperature
Bedrooms or rooms farthest from the furnace are colder than usual
Increased dust on furniture and surfaces in the home
Worsened allergies, sneezing, or congestion indoors
Whistling sound from the return air vents
Furnace makes a 'click' and shuts off when starting (safety limit trip)
Last filter change was over 90 days ago — or you can't remember

Free 5-minute fix
Half of January's 'no-heat' calls are a clogged filter.
If your furnace short-cycles or won't keep up, change the filter before you call anyone. Cheapest fix in HVAC.

The Process
How a Filter Replacement Visit Works
Measure and verify
If we haven't been out before, tech measures the filter slot (W x H x D) and photographs the cabinet for your file. Right size, right MERV, right airflow direction — all three matter.
Swap the filter
Power off, remove old filter, vacuum any visible debris in the slot, install new filter with arrows pointing toward the furnace (return air direction), close cabinet.
Quick blower check
Power back on, listen for normal blower startup, verify supply airflow at a register. If a clogged filter caused a safety lockout, we reset and confirm normal operation.
Document and schedule
We log the filter size, MERV, and date so future visits go fast. We can set you on a 60, 75, or 90-day rotation depending on your environment, or we can ship filters direct.
Optional: full tune-up
If we're already there, a full furnace tune-up adds 30-45 minutes for $129 — flame sensor cleaning, blower amp draw check, gas pressure test, heat rise verification. Worth it once a year.
