Water Filtration
WATER FILTRATION — DAYBREAK WHOLE-HOME UPGRADES
The original Daybreak builder ran a single sediment filter and called it good. The upgrade is whole-home carbon for chlorine plus an under-sink RO for drinking water — better water at every tap, smart-monitor capable.

Overview
What's actually in Daybreak tap water
Daybreak gets municipal water through Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. It meets all federal safety standards. It's also chlorinated (or sometimes chloramine-treated depending on rotation), carries 200-400 ppm of total dissolved solids, has 18-22 grains of hardness (which is a softener problem, not a filter problem), and occasionally picks up sediment from upstream infrastructure work. If you can smell chlorine in the shower or the kitchen tap tastes off, that's not imaginary.
Most Daybreak builders installed a basic 1-stage sediment filter on the main inlet. That's adequate for stopping debris but does nothing for chlorine, taste, or the rest of what makes filtered water actually pleasant. Most of our South Jordan filtration calls are upgrades — replacing the builder filter cartridge with a real multi-stage system, adding an under-sink RO at the kitchen, or pairing whole-home carbon with the existing sediment housing.
Three levels of filtration to consider
- Whole-home filtration — filter at the point where water enters the house, every tap gets filtered water. Best for chlorine, chloramine, sediment, light TDS reduction. $1,450-$3,850 installed
- Under-sink RO (reverse osmosis) — 4 or 5-stage system under the kitchen sink with a dedicated drinking tap. Removes 95-99% of TDS, heavy metals, nitrate, pharmaceuticals, PFAS. $485-$1,250 installed. The best drinking water you can have at home
- Refrigerator filter — basic chlorine and taste reduction. Cheapest option but doesn't filter the rest of the house
We usually recommend a combination for Daybreak homes — whole-home for every tap (so you're not showering in disinfectant), plus an RO under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. Total install $2,000-$4,500 for both.
What whole-home filtration removes
Standard activated-carbon: chlorine (95%+), taste and odor, light sediment. Catalytic carbon: adds chloramine removal (some Jordan Valley rotations use chloramine). Multi-stage: sediment pre-filter + carbon + heavy-metal media. UV stage: bacterial protection (rare need on municipal Daybreak water; common on East Bench wells). Does not remove hardness — that's a softener's job. Does not remove TDS significantly — that's RO's job.
Smart-home filtration
Several manufacturers now ship wifi-monitored whole-home filters that report flow, filter status, and replacement reminders to an app. Aquasana Rhino, Pentair Pelican, and Springwell all have smart variants. Native Home Assistant integration on most. Adds $200-$600 to a standard install. For Daybreak homeowners already running smart-home dashboards, this is usually a yes.
Honest math for Daybreak
Most Daybreak homes don't strictly need filtration — municipal water meets federal safety standards. Reasons to install: chlorine is aggressive on water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines (removing it extends appliance life 2-3 years), showering in chlorinated water dries skin and hair, bottled water costs add up ($30-$60/mo for a family), and RO water is measurably better than most bottled brands at pennies per gallon. For a Daybreak family already buying bottled water, RO pays for itself in 1-2 years.

Reasons to Consider Water Filtration in Daybreak
Filtration is a quality-of-life upgrade, not usually a safety issue on municipal Daybreak water. Here's when it makes sense.
Chlorine smell or taste in tap water or the shower
Buying bottled water regularly because the kitchen tap tastes flat
Sediment or rusty particles occasionally come out of the tap (recent main work in your area)
Original builder sediment filter has never been replaced
Skin or hair feels dry after showers — kids in the family are reporting it
Concerned about pharmaceuticals, PFAS, or other trace contaminants
Coffee or tea tastes off even with a quality machine
Water heater, dishwasher, or washing machine failing earlier than expected
You want smart-home integration on filter replacement reminders
Family member with eczema, sensitive skin, or color-treated hair

The Process
How a Daybreak Water Filtration Install Runs

On the truck
Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.
Water test and recommendation
Tech tests TDS, chlorine (or chloramine), pH, and iron at the kitchen tap. Based on the results and what you want to achieve, we recommend the right system — whole-home, RO, or both.
Quote options
Usually 2-3 options at different price points. Entry-level carbon for chlorine only, mid-range multi-stage for chlorine + sediment + heavy metals, premium with catalytic carbon and smart-monitoring. Plus RO options for drinking water.
Install day
Whole-home installs at the main entry, often replacing the builder sediment housing. Plumbed with bypass valves so filters can be changed without shutting off the house water. Half-day for whole-home only, full day if adding RO under the kitchen sink. Smart-monitor wifi configured during commissioning.
Commission and test
Flush new carbon cartridges (15-30 minutes), verify flow rate and pressure, re-test TDS and chlorine to confirm performance, configure manufacturer app on your phone if smart-monitor.
Annual filter service
Filters need replacement on a schedule — every 6-12 months for standard carbon, 12 months for catalytic, 12-24 months for RO membranes. Quality Service Club coordinates this automatically. Smart-monitored systems alert you in the app.
