Overview

Smell gas? Stop reading and leave the house.

If you can smell gas inside your home — that rotten-egg sulfur smell — leave the house, leave the door open, do not flip light switches or use a phone inside, and call 911 or Dominion Energy from outside. Then call us. Gas leaks are the one plumbing emergency where the right move is to leave first and ask questions later.

Once the immediate danger is handled, the repair starts. Gas line work in Utah requires a DOPL-licensed plumber and a city permit. We do both. Our SLC techs are licensed for gas, carry leak-detection equipment, and pull the permit before any repair happens.

What we work on

  • Leak detection — gas smell location with electronic detector and bubble test. Common in old SLC homes with original black iron pipe and threaded fittings that loosen over time.
  • Repair existing line — patch a corroded section, replace a failed fitting, swap out failing flex connectors.
  • New gas line install — for a new range, dryer, fire pit, generator, water heater conversion, or pool heater.
  • Gas line upsize — common during tankless water heater conversion. 1/2" to 3/4" or 1" upsize from meter to appliance.
  • Old black iron replacement — the original gas pipe in pre-1970 SLC homes corrodes over decades. Wholesale replacement to CSST or modern black iron is the permanent fix.
  • Dominion meter coordination — meter upgrades for higher-BTU loads (tankless, generator, large appliances).

The SLC old-home gas line problem

Pre-1970 SLC homes were plumbed for gas in black iron pipe with threaded fittings. The pipe itself can last 80+ years. The threaded joints don't. Pipe dope dries out, threads corrode, and over a few decades you get slow weep leaks at fittings. We see this every week — homeowner reports a faint gas smell near the basement furnace or water heater, and the leak turns out to be a 1942 union joint that finally let go. The fix is straightforward when caught early. Catch it late and you're talking about evacuating the house and Dominion shutting off the meter.

What Valley does differently in SLC

Every gas job is permitted with the city. Every leak detection is documented. Every repair gets a pressure test (10–15 PSI for 15+ minutes) and an SLC inspection before we close the wall back up. Quality Service Club members get the annual gas line and connector inspection as part of their plumbing membership — single best way to catch a slow leak before you smell it. Plus 15% off any repair work.

Pricing is flat-rate. Leak detection is $225–$685 depending on access. Permitted repairs run $385–$1,850. Major line replacement quoted after on-site assessment.

The Process

How a Gas Line Service Call Goes in SLC

On the truck

Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.

  1. Triage on the phone

If you smell gas, we tell you to leave the house and call Dominion or 911 first. If it's a non-emergency hookup or upsize, we schedule normally. We never tell you to wait through an active gas smell.

  2. Leak isolation

On-site, we isolate the leak with electronic detector and soap-bubble test on every fitting. We confirm the source before we touch a wrench. If the meter side is leaking, that's Dominion — we coordinate with them.

  3. SLC permit and shutoff

Permit pulled before any repair. Gas shut off at the meter or appliance valve while we work. For new appliance hookups, we pull the permit before scheduling install.

  4. Repair and pressure test

Repair with code-approved fittings. Pressure test to 10–15 PSI for 15 minutes minimum to verify no leaks downstream. Document the test with photos for the inspection.

  5. City inspection and restore

SLC inspector verifies the work. Gas back on, appliances relit, final smell-check at every joint. Paperwork to you for your records.
