Frequently Asked Questions

1. What causes a sewer line to clog?

Sewer line clogs are typically caused by a buildup of debris, including grease, hair, soap scum, and food waste. Tree roots can sometimes invade sewer pipes through small cracks, causing blockages. Other factors include accumulating non-flushable items like wipes, diapers, or paper towels. Over time, these materials restrict wastewater flow, leading to a clog.

2. How can I prevent tree roots from damaging my sewer line?

To prevent tree roots from invading your sewer line, ensure that trees are planted a safe distance away from your pipes. If you have existing trees near your sewer line, consider regular inspections and maintenance, such as applying a root barrier or using foaming root killers that prevent roots from growing into your pipes. Valley Plumbing can also provide professional inspections and solutions, such as trenchless sewer repair, to address any damage.

3. What are the signs of a clogged drain?

Common signs of a clogged drain include slow-draining water in sinks, bathtubs, or showers, gurgling sounds coming from the pipes, unpleasant odors, and water backups in multiple drains or toilets. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s best to address the issue early before it leads to a complete blockage.

4. Should I use chemical drain cleaners?

While chemical drain cleaners may seem like a quick fix, they can cause more harm than good. These harsh chemicals can erode your pipes over time, leading to leaks or costly repairs. At Valley Plumbing, we recommend using safer alternatives like mechanical snaking or hydro jetting to clear clogs without damaging your plumbing system.

5. What is hydro jetting, and how does it work?

Hydro jetting is a highly effective drain cleaning method that uses high-pressure water to remove debris, grease, and other blockages from your pipes. The process involves inserting a specialized nozzle into the drain line, which then blasts water at a pressure strong enough to clear clogs and clean the interior walls of the pipes, preventing future buildup.

6. How often should I clean my drains?

Regular drain cleaning helps prevent clogs and keeps your plumbing system functioning efficiently. At Valley Plumbing, we recommend scheduling professional drain cleaning at least once a year for maintenance. Homes with older plumbing systems, frequent clogs, or tree roots near the sewer line may benefit from more frequent cleanings.

Feel free to contact Valley Plumbing for further assistance or to schedule drain cleaning and sewer maintenance services.

Warning signs

Signs Your Drain Needs Professional Cleaning

Most people wait too long. These are the symptoms that mean it's time to call instead of reaching for another bottle of drain cleaner.

  • Water pools in your sink, tub, or shower and drains slow even after plunging

  • Gurgling sounds come from one drain when you use another — a sign the main line is partially blocked

  • Sewage smell rises up through a floor drain or from the basement

  • Multiple drains in the house clog or slow down at the same time

  • Your toilet fills slowly or water rises in the bowl when the washing machine drains

  • You snaked the line yourself and it clogged again within a week

  • You see wet patches in the yard above where the sewer line runs

  • The kitchen sink backs up after the dishwasher runs

  • Repeated clogs in the same fixture every few months

The Process

How Our Drain Cleaning Service Works

  1. Walk-through and diagnosis

The tech asks what you're seeing, checks which fixtures are affected, and identifies the most likely spot in the line. If multiple drains are clogged, we go straight to the main cleanout.

  2. Clear the line

For most clogs, a cable machine (snake) pulls the blockage out in 30 to 60 minutes. For grease-heavy lines, roots, or commercial stacks, we switch to hydro-jetting — a high-pressure water jet that scours the pipe wall clean.

  3. Camera inspection (when needed)

If the clog keeps coming back, we run a camera down the pipe to see what's happening. Cracked pipe, belly, root intrusion, or collapsed section — you see it on the monitor the same time we do.

  4. Flow test and clean-up

Before we leave, we run water through every affected fixture to confirm the line is clear and draining at full speed. Work area gets wiped down — no mess left behind.

  5. Prevention and honest options

If there's a real problem in the pipe itself, we tell you what it is, what it costs to fix, and what happens if you do nothing. If regular snaking is all you need, we say that too.
