Overview
What a sewer camera actually shows you

Residents throughout Salt Lake, Utah, and Davis Counties rely on Valley Plumbing, Heating & Cooling for professional video sewer line inspections. These inspections allow us to pinpoint problems within your sewer line and make it easier to determine the condition of the line and the most effective method for fixing the problem.
As the camera enters the line, our technicians will sit down with you and show you, through a monitor, what is going on inside your pipes and what they are diagnosing. You will be able to see the source of the problem, so you know exactly what is going on.

What Causes Problems in Sewer Lines?
While there is no single source of sewer line damage, three main causes include:
- Tree root intrusion: Tree roots are the most common cause of sewer line backup. Since roots are living, growing plants, they need water to thrive. This means if the closest water source is in your sewer line, that is what they will target, creating clogs and blockages inside the line.
- Temperature spike: When temperatures rise, the ground can shift, causing your sewer line to shift. Alternatively, cold weather can cause pipes to freeze, resulting in slow or backed-up drains. Slow-moving water causes ice to form and expand, which can cause your line to crack.
- Deteriorating pipes: Old, cast-iron pipes can easily crack and break down over time, creating problems within the line. For this reason, many new homes are built using plastic or copper pipes.
When Do You Need This Service?
Video cameras are used to identify various pipe damages, obstructions, and other issues that prevent the proper flow of waste out to the city sewer or septic tank. We don't just want to clear a line for you - we want to make sure the problem is thoroughly taken care of to prevent recurring problems.
If you have a main sewer line that is backing up into your home, you will want to know that your line has been cleared and the sewage problem isn't going to happen again. We will do all we can to make sure the problem is fully resolved and that you will not experience recurring issues.

Reasons to Scope the Line
If any of these apply to you, a 30-minute camera inspection is the difference between guessing and knowing.
You're buying a home built before 1980 — sewer lines are not part of a standard home inspection
The same drain has backed up more than twice in the past year
Multiple drains are sluggish at the same time
You can smell sewer gas in the basement or near a floor drain
There's a wet or mushy spot in the yard above where the sewer line runs
Toilet water level drops on its own between flushes
Big cottonwood, maple, or elm within 20 feet of the sewer line
You just had a contractor quote a sewer replacement — get a second opinion first
Previous owner mentioned a sewer issue that was never fully documented
Planning a remodel or addition that will sit over the sewer line

Buying a home?
A $195 scope beats a $15,000 surprise.
Sewer lines aren't in the home inspection. If the house was built before 1980, this is the single best due-diligence spend you can make.

The Process
How a Camera Inspection Runs
Access the cleanout
Sewer cleanouts are usually front yard, basement, or on the side of the house. If there's no cleanout we may pull a toilet or go through a roof vent — slightly more time, same result.
Camera down the line
Self-leveling head with LED ring light, pushed on a stiff fiberglass rod. Most Utah houses have 70 to 150 feet of line from cleanout to city main — takes about 15-20 minutes to cover the full run at inspection speed.
Live monitoring — you watch with us
Tech narrates what the camera sees. Pipe material, joints, scale, roots, bellies, cracks — called out as we find them. You see the monitor and can ask questions on the spot.
Mark the problem location
If there's a defect, we use the transmitter on the camera head and a handheld locator to mark the spot on the ground above — within inches of the exact depth and location. Critical for accurate repair quotes.
Report, video, and options
You get a written inspection summary, the raw video file, and still images sent to you within 24 hours. If repair is needed, we quote it three ways — spot repair, lining, or replacement — and let you decide.
