Overview

What sewer lining actually is

Issues with your main sewer line can turn into a major problem for your home. This line is responsible for taking all of the household waste out to the city sewer. Over time, tree roots can infiltrate this line and cause it to clog or even break. To make sure your sewer line problems are properly resolved, look to the team at Valley Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. We proudly serve customers throughout Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties.

What's Causing My Sewer Line Issues?

Although there is not one sole cause of sewer line problems, there are several common culprits, including:

Tree root invasion: Tree roots are the most common cause of sewer line damage because they need water, and they do not discriminate. That means they can easily break through your sewer line and continue growing, which can cause further clogs throughout your line.

Temperature spikes: When the temperature spikes, the ground can shift, causing your pipes to disconnect or break.

Old, worn-out pipes: Old iron and clay pipes are susceptible to cracking and deterioration. Years of chemical drain cleaner use cause further damage and corrosion, and over time, the pipes wear down.

Problem Signs to Watch Out for

If you notice the following signs, there may be a deeper problem that needs to be taken care of immediately. Watch out for the following:

  • Sewage smell around your property
  • Slow to empty drains
  • Standing water near your sewer line
  • Gurgling noise coming from your drains
  • Residue backing up into your sink/tub

If you notice the problem signs in your home, call your trusted sewer line specialists to determine the source of the problem and take action to repair or replace your line.

How Can I Prevent Future Issues?

Prevention is the best medicine, and that goes for your sewer lines as well. Making a few slight changes can make all the difference when it comes to preventing future sewer problems:

  • Know what is ok and what is not ok to put down your drains. For instance, food, hygienic products, diapers, grease, oil, and other materials are never ok to go down the toilet or drains.
  • Find out where your sewer lines are located before performing any large excavation project.
  • If you are planting trees, plant them as far away from sewage lines as possible.
  • Put drain catches in your showers, tubs, and sinks.

Warning signs

Signs You're a Candidate for CIPP Lining

Lining is the right call when the pipe is aging but not dead. Here's when it makes sense.

  • Cast iron main showing corrosion or tuberculation on camera

  • Clay lateral line with root intrusion at multiple joints

  • Home built 1920-1975 with original sewer line

  • Recurring root intrusion you've snaked multiple times

  • Pipe has small cracks or hairline fractures but isn't collapsed

  • Sewer line runs under a driveway, patio, or mature landscaping

  • Multi-unit building, HOA, or commercial property with tenant concerns

  • Previous quote for dig-up sewer replacement was $15,000+

  • Offset joints or minor separations visible on camera scope

  • You want a permanent fix without the yard damage of excavation

The Process

How a CIPP Lining Job Runs

  1. Pre-line camera scope and measure

Full video inspection confirms lining is the right fix and measures the exact length and diameter of pipe to be lined. We locate the line, mark any defects, and identify the cure method that fits.

  2. Clean the host pipe

Hydro jetting and mechanical cleaning strips the inside of the old pipe to bare metal or clay. Critical — any remaining grease, scale, or debris becomes a weak spot in the new liner. We run a post-clean camera pass before anything goes in.

  3. Prepare and inverted the liner

Felt liner is saturated with two-part epoxy resin (wet-out process), then inverted into the host pipe using air or water pressure. As it goes in, it turns inside-out, pressing tight against the old pipe wall along the full length.

  4. Cure in place

Depending on liner type and diameter, we cure with ambient temperature, hot water, steam, or UV light. Cure time is typically 2-4 hours. During this time the liner hardens into a rigid, seamless, chemically bonded pipe.

  5. Final camera scope and city inspection

Once cured, we cut the end caps, verify the liner's internal diameter and surface quality with a post-cure camera scope, flow-test every affected fixture, and schedule the city inspection. You get the video and photos for your records.

FAQ

CIPP Lining FAQs

Standard residential main line lining runs $6,500 to $12,500 for a typical 50-80 foot run. Shorter lateral lining is $4,850-$8,500. Commercial mains are $12,500+ depending on size and length. Traditional excavation on the same line is often $15,000-$25,000 once restoration of driveway, landscaping, and sprinklers is included — so lining usually saves 30-50% on top of being faster.
