Overview
What a sewer camera shows you in an old SLC home
A sewer camera is the difference between guessing what's wrong with a drain line and knowing. We feed a flexible cable with a high-resolution camera head down the cleanout, run it the full length of the line out to the city connection, and you watch the monitor in real time as the lens moves through your pipe. By the time we're done, you've seen every joint, every bend, every crack, and every issue.
Three reasons people in Salt Lake City call us to camera a sewer line.
Reason 1: Pre-purchase inspection
You're buying a 1925 Avenues bungalow, a 1950s Sugar House rambler, or a downtown brownstone, and you want to know what the sewer line actually looks like before you sign. The standard home inspection doesn't cover the sewer line beyond a quick flush check. The sewer line is buried, 60–100+ years old, often clay or cast iron, and a $200 camera inspection can save you $15,000–$30,000 on a buried surprise. We've seen plenty of pre-purchase SLC inspections that revealed a collapsed clay main right under the front yard. Closing costs got renegotiated.
Reason 2: Recurring clog diagnosis
The same kitchen line in your 1932 Liberty Wells home backs up twice a year and you're tired of paying for snake jobs that don't last. The camera shows why — usually a belly in old cast iron, a crack in a clay sewer joint, or roots from a century-old elm working through a coupling. Until you know, you can't fix it permanently.
Reason 3: Pre-trenchless or pre-repair scope
Before we quote a sewer line replacement, trenchless lining, or hydro-jetting, we run a camera. Quoting blind is how plumbers oversell. The camera shows whether you really need the $12,000 trenchless or whether a $475 jetting solves it.
What you get with a camera inspection
- Live video as we run the line — you watch on the monitor with the tech
- Recorded video file emailed to you afterward (you keep it for resale or insurance)
- Written summary of findings with photos at problem points
- Distance markings — we know exactly how far down the line each issue is
- Honest recommendation for next steps, including "leave it alone" when that's right
What's specific to old SLC homes
Old SLC sewer lines have predictable failure modes. Pre-1940 homes often have clay sewer pipe to the city main — clay cracks, joints separate, and tree roots find every gap. Yalecrest, Harvard-Yale, and Avenues homes under century-old elms see the worst of this. Pre-1970 homes have cast iron from the foundation to the cleanout, then clay or Orangeburg out to the street. Cast iron tuberculation (scale buildup), Orangeburg collapse (the tar-paper material was used in some 1940s–60s SLC builds and it's all failing now), and bellying mid-line are the typical findings. We see all of these and we know what we're looking at.
Pricing is flat-rate at $295–$485 for residential. Members of the Quality Service Club get 15% off plus the annual whole-home plumbing inspection that includes a quick camera spot-check.

Reasons to Camera the Sewer Line in Your SLC Home
If any of these match, a camera inspection is worth the $295–$485.
Buying a pre-1980 SLC home — pre-purchase scope
Selling and want clean inspection records
Same drain has clogged 2+ times in the past year
Multiple drains backing up at once
Sewer smell from basement floor drain you can't pin down
Wet patch in the parkstrip or yard above the sewer line
Trees with mature root systems within 30 feet of the line (Yalecrest, Avenues)
Before approving a sewer line replacement quote from another company (we 2nd-opinion free)
Insurance claim documentation for sewer line damage
Diagnosing a sewer gas smell that won't go away

Pre-purchase
$485 today saves $25,000 at closing on an old SLC home.
Standard home inspections don't scope the sewer line. A camera inspection on a pre-1980 home is the cheapest insurance you'll buy this year.

The Process
How a Camera Inspection Goes in SLC

On the truck
Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.
Find the cleanout
Most pre-1950 SLC homes have a basement cleanout, usually black cast iron near the floor. Some pre-1940 homes lack a cleanout entirely — we can work through a pulled toilet, but installing a cleanout ($450–$850) makes every future service cheaper.
Run the camera
Camera head feeds down the line at 1–2 feet per second. Tech narrates what you're seeing on the monitor — joints, transitions, bellies, root intrusion. Total run is usually 50–80 feet to the city main. Takes 30–60 minutes.
Mark distance and depth
Camera has a depth meter and locator. We mark exactly how far down the line each issue is and where in the yard if locating is needed. Critical for trenchless or excavation planning.
Review findings on monitor
We pause at each issue, point out what it is, and explain whether it needs immediate action, planned repair, or monitoring. You see everything we see.
Documentation
Recorded video file emailed within 24 hours. Written summary with photos at key points. Recommendations with prices for any repair options.
