Overview

What a Professional Drain Cleaning Actually Does

Most drain clogs don't fix themselves, and pouring another bottle of chemical cleaner down the line is the worst thing you can do to a Salt Lake City drain system. Most pre-1980 SLC homes have cast iron drain stacks. Drano and similar products eat at corroded cast iron at the joints and just sit on top of the clog if it's deeper than a foot or two — corroding the pipe while the blockage stays put.

A professional drain cleaning clears the actual blockage. We run a mechanical auger or hydro-jet through the line, break up what's in there (grease, hair, wipes, tree roots, scale buildup), and pull it out. If it's a recurring clog in an old SLC home, we put a camera down the pipe to find out why — because a Sugar House sink backing up three times a year usually isn't a sink problem. It's a cast iron belly twenty feet down the stack.

When a drain cleaning is the right call in SLC

  • One fixture is slow or clogged and plunging isn't working
  • Multiple drains are sluggish at the same time (almost always a main line — common in old homes with original cast iron)
  • You hear gurgling from other drains when one fixture runs (vent or partial main blockage)
  • A sewer smell is coming up through a basement floor drain (often dried-out trap or cracked stack joint)
  • You've snaked it yourself and it clogged again within days
  • Tree roots — Yalecrest, Harvard-Yale, and the Avenues have century-old elms and maples whose roots have been working through clay sewer mains for decades

What Valley does differently

Our SLC drain trucks carry a cable machine, a hydro-jetter, and a camera on every truck. If a snake doesn't fix it in 30 minutes, we switch to hydro-jetting. If the line keeps clogging, we inspect it on camera, tell you what's wrong, and give you options — including leaving things alone when that's the honest answer. We've crawled under enough Avenues bungalows to know what 1908 cast iron is supposed to look like and what it looks like when it's done.

Pricing is flat-rate and we quote it before we start. No hourly creep, no surprise fees, and we don't upsell a sewer replacement for a ten-minute snake job.

If drains are a recurring headache at your old SLC place, ask about our Quality Service Club — $79 a year gets you 15% off every repair, priority dispatch, and an annual drain inspection that usually catches the next clog before it becomes a callout.

Warning signs

Signs Your SLC Drain Needs Professional Cleaning

Old cast iron mains in the Avenues, Liberty Wells, and Sugar House clog differently than newer PVC. These are the symptoms that mean it's time to call instead of reaching for another bottle of drain cleaner.

  • Water pools in your sink, tub, or shower and drains slow even after plunging

  • Gurgling sounds come from one drain when you use another — partial main line blockage

  • Sewage smell rises up through a basement floor drain (common in old SLC stacks)

  • Multiple drains in the house clog or slow down at the same time

  • Toilet fills slowly or water rises in the bowl when the washer drains

  • You snaked the line yourself and it clogged again within a week

  • Wet patches in the parkstrip above where the sewer line runs (root or break)

  • Kitchen sink backs up after the dishwasher runs

  • Repeated clogs in the same fixture every few months — usually a cast iron belly or scale buildup

  • Toilet rocking on its base in an old home — cast iron flange may be cracked

The Process

How Our SLC Drain Cleaning Service Works

Valley Plumbing service truck parked at a Salt Lake City home

On the truck

Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.

  1. Walk-through and diagnosis

Tech asks what you're seeing, checks which fixtures are affected, and identifies the most likely spot in the line. In old SLC homes with cast iron stacks, multiple-drain backups almost always point to a main line issue — we go straight to the cleanout.

  2. Clear the line

For most clogs, a cable machine pulls the blockage out in 30 to 60 minutes. For grease-heavy lines, root intrusion in old clay mains, or commercial stacks, we switch to hydro-jetting — high-pressure water that scours the pipe wall clean.

  3. Camera inspection (when needed)

If the clog keeps coming back, we run a camera down the pipe. Cracked cast iron joint, belly in a sagging old stack, root intrusion through a clay main, or collapsed Orangeburg section — you see it on the monitor the same time we do.

  4. Flow test and clean-up

Before we leave, we run water through every affected fixture to confirm the line is clear. Work area gets wiped down — no mess on your original hardwood.

  5. Prevention and honest options

If there's a real problem in the pipe itself, we tell you what it is, what it costs to fix, and what happens if you do nothing. If regular snaking is all you need, we say that too.

Snake vs. Hydro Jet vs. Trenchless — Which Do You Actually Need?

Three ways to handle a clog. The right one depends on what's in the pipe and whether the pipe itself is damaged. Old SLC homes often need more than a cable.
