Overview

When to scope your sewer line

A video sewer inspection runs a small waterproof camera through the sewer line on a flexible push rod. You see the inside of the pipe in real time — material, condition, root intrusion, cracks, belly, scale, blockages. The footage tells you exactly what's wrong (or confirms everything is fine) with no guessing. Most calls take 30-60 minutes.

Common Lehi reasons to scope

  1. Pre-purchase home inspection — buying a Lehi home (Old Lehi especially) and want to know the condition of the sewer line before close. Repair after closing is on you; if the scope finds collapsed pipe, you negotiate with the seller
  2. Recurring clogs — same line backs up every 6-18 months despite repeated snaking. Camera tells you why (roots, belly, broken pipe)
  3. Buying or selling Old Lehi — homes from 1900s-1950s with cast iron or clay sewer mains often have issues that should be disclosed or negotiated
  4. Slab leak suspect — sewer line under slab might be the source. Camera scope confirms
  5. Recent backup or sewage smell — confirm the cause and assess remaining pipe condition
  6. New tree on a Lehi property — confirm roots haven't reached the sewer yet
  7. Insurance documentation — claim involves sewer line; footage documents condition for adjuster
  8. HOA or association requirement — annual or pre-sale sewer inspection required by some Lehi HOAs

What we look for

Material identification — cast iron (Old Lehi pre-1980), clay (older Old Lehi), PVC (Lehi 1990+), HDPE (newest installs). Material tells us how the line will behave long-term.

Root intrusion — fine hair roots through joint separations, mature roots blocking flow, root masses you can see growing into the pipe. Common in Old Lehi front yards with mature trees.

Belly (sag) — pipe section sagged below grade, water and debris collect there, recurring clogs follow. Common in newer construction where backfill wasn't compacted properly.

Cracks and breaks — hairline through full collapse. Determines whether trenchless lining will work or full replacement is needed.

Scale buildup — calcium deposits inside the pipe. More common on water supply lines than sewer, but appears in some Old Lehi cast iron mains.

Connection points — house connection to city main, side connections from kitchen/laundry, cleanout positions. Confirms the line layout.

Lehi-specific scope use cases

Pre-purchase Old Lehi (Main Street area, older neighborhoods) — sewer lines installed 1920s-1960s are at end of life. Cast iron with rust, clay with root intrusion, occasional Orangeburg (paper-bonded fiber, fails completely). Scope before you close.

New-construction warranty period (Traverse Mountain, Holbrook Farms, Skye Estates, Cold Springs Ranch) — builders sometimes leave debris, drop tools, or skip the cleanout install. Year-1 warranty scope catches issues while the builder is still on the hook.

Recurring backups in mature trees — Lehi front yards with 30+ year old trees regularly have root issues. Scope identifies which joint is letting them in.

What Valley does differently

Lehi office at 1490 N 300 E with sewer camera trucks running daily. Same-day service in most cases. Footage saved to a USB or cloud link on request — useful for real estate disclosure, insurance claims, and HOA documentation. Quality Service Club members get the camera scope at no charge as part of the annual plumbing inspection.

The camera scope is honest information. We don't push trenchless or repair that the camera doesn't justify. If your line looks fine, we tell you it looks fine. If it's at end of life, we show you the footage that proves it before quoting any work.

The Process

How a Lehi Sewer Camera Scope Runs

Valley Plumbing technician running a sewer camera through a cleanout at a Lehi home

On the truck

Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.

  1. Locate the cleanout

Tech finds the sewer cleanout (usually exterior in newer Lehi homes, sometimes interior in Old Lehi basements). If there isn't a cleanout, we can scope through a toilet or roof vent in some cases.

  2. Camera setup

Waterproof camera on a flexible push rod fed into the cleanout. Distance counter tracks how far down the line we are. Real-time monitor shows the live feed.

  3. Run the line

Push the camera through the entire sewer line from the house to the city tap (typically 50-150 feet). Slow pass; you see the same view we do, including narration of what we're looking at.

  4. Identify issues and locate

Any issues — roots, breaks, belly — get noted with distance from cleanout and sometimes a surface locate (we trace the camera position to the yard surface so you know exactly where to dig if repair is needed).

  5. Written report and footage

Written report with photos. USB or cloud link with the full video on request. Recommendations for any follow-up — jetting, lining, repair, or just monitoring.
