Overview
Gas work is regulated — what we handle and how
Gas line work in Utah is regulated by the Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). It requires a licensed plumber, a city-issued permit, and an inspection on every job above a basic appliance reconnect. Lehi enforces the permit requirement strictly, and so does Dominion Energy for any new tap or service change. We handle the licensing, the permits, the pressure tests, and the inspector coordination so you don't have to.
What we do
- Gas leak detection — combustible gas detector, electronic sniffer, or soap test. Locate the leak, isolate it, lock off the section, schedule the permitted repair. $225-$685 detection
- Gas line repair — replace damaged or leaking section with appropriate steel or CSST flex line, pressure test, inspector sign-off. $385-$1,850
- Gas line upsize for tankless — Lehi tank-to-tankless conversions almost always need 1/2" to 3/4" or 1" upsize. $485-$1,250
- New appliance hookups — gas range, dryer, fireplace, water heater, pool heater, hot tub, outdoor BBQ stub, garage heater. Permitted, leak-tested, $185-$685 typical
- Gas line extension — running new line for a remodel addition or new appliance location. $485-$1,850
- Meter coordination with Dominion Energy — meter upsize for higher BTU demand on tankless or pool heater. We coordinate; utility does the actual meter work
- Full re-pipe of gas — rare, usually only on Old Lehi homes with original galvanized gas lines. $2,500-$8,500
- Earthquake gas shutoff valve — automatic shutoff that activates on seismic event. $385-$685 install
Lehi-specific gas considerations
Dominion Energy serves Lehi with natural gas. The mains are well-maintained and most newer Lehi neighborhoods (Traverse Mountain, Holbrook Farms, Skye Estates, Cold Springs Ranch, Spring Creek) have generous main supply. Tankless conversions and pool heater additions generally don't require meter changes — but we always check before quoting.
Old Lehi homes (Main Street area, 1900s-1950s) sometimes still have the original galvanized gas lines. These are at end of life, prone to internal corrosion and leaks at threaded joints. If you're in one of these homes and you've had a gas leak, a partial or full gas re-pipe is usually the right long-term fix.
CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) is what we use for most flex runs in newer Lehi homes. It's faster to install than rigid steel and works well in finished spaces. Older homes use rigid black iron pipe; we keep both on the truck.
Earthquake gas shutoff valves — Wasatch Front sits on the Wasatch Fault. Lehi is close enough that an earthquake-activated automatic gas shutoff valve is a sensible add-on for any new install. Costs $385-$685, mounts on the line just downstream of the meter, shuts off automatically if it detects significant ground shake. Cheap insurance.
Smell gas right now?
- Don't flip switches, don't use the phone inside, don't light anything
- Get out of the house
- From outside, shut the gas meter off — the lever is on the side of the meter, perpendicular = on, parallel to pipe = off, you need a wrench
- Call Dominion Energy emergency line (1-800-323-5517) AND call us
- We arrive, locate the leak, lock it off, schedule the permitted repair

Warning signs
Signs You Have a Gas Issue in Your Lehi Home
Gas leaks have a distinctive smell (mercaptan added to natural gas). Don't ignore it.
Sulfur or rotten-egg smell near a gas appliance, the meter, or anywhere in the house
Hissing sound from a gas line, fitting, or valve
Higher than expected gas bill (could indicate slow leak)
Dead grass or vegetation in a line over the gas line in the yard
Pilot light won't stay lit on a water heater, furnace, or fireplace
Yellow or orange flame on a gas burner (should be blue)
Gas appliance making popping or whistling sounds
Unexplained physical symptoms (headaches, dizziness, nausea) in the home
Tankless install needs a gas line upsize
New gas appliance needs to be hooked up (range, dryer, BBQ, pool heater)

Licensed gas work
Gas requires DOPL license + city permit. We do both.
Most handymen and unlicensed plumbers can't pull a permit for gas work in Utah. We can. Every Lehi gas job is permitted, pressure-tested, and inspected.

The Process
How a Lehi Gas Line Service Call Runs

On the truck
Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.
Phone triage
If you smell gas right now, dispatch tells you to evacuate, shut the meter, and call Dominion Energy emergency line. Then we roll a truck. Non-emergency calls (line upsize, new appliance hookup) get scheduled normally.
On-site detection or scope
For leaks: combustible gas detector sweeps the entire system, locates the leak, isolates and locks off the section. For new install: tech reviews appliance specs, BTU demand, line length, and existing capacity.
Permit pull and quote
Most gas work in Lehi requires a permit. We pull it at the city before starting work and include the fee in the flat-rate quote. Quote in writing before any work.
Repair or install
Replace damaged section, install new line, or hook up new appliance. CSST flex or black iron rigid as appropriate. Pressure test the line at 15 PSI for 15 minutes per code.
Inspection and sign-off
City inspector verifies code compliance. Dominion Energy notified for any service-line changes. Final test, paperwork to you for records, manufacturer warranty registered on any new appliance.
